Both incidents happened in Port Chester on both Tuesday, June 20, and Wednesday, June 21, and consisted of unprovoked violent attacks on police officers in the village, according to the Port Chester Police Department.
The first of the incidents happened on Tuesday night when a 25-year-old man charged an officer while he was engaged in traffic duty near a prom photoshoot at Lyon Park.
After tackling the officer from behind and forcing him to the ground, the suspect was eventually subdued after additional officers helped in the struggle.
The suspect, identified as Port Chester resident Julio Quizhpi-Ayavaca, was charged with second-degree assault as well as obstructing and resisting arrest and was released on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
After his release, Quizhpi-Ayavaca then allegedly committed another attack against two more officers engaged in traffic duty for a road construction job after walking up to them in a confrontational way.
After fighting the officers, violently resisting arrest, and attempting to get into a marked police cruiser, Quizhpi-Ayavaca was eventually arrested a second time.
He has since been arraigned in court and remanded to Westchester County Jail, police said, adding that they believe he is new to Port Chester and may be affiliated with a known gang.
The department is now working to find the motive behind Quizhpi-Ayavaca's attacks and said that their crisis team has not made any progress in helping him.
The officer involved in the first attack suffered injuries as a result and will now be "out of work for a while," the department said.
"We will do our best to seek an understanding and possible solution to this individual's behavior," the department said on social media, also adding that there is no current threat to the public.
